Force Myanmar to take Rohingya back: BNP
The BNP yesterday urged the government to make serious “diplomatic efforts” to compel Myanmar to resolve the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
“Our demand is very clear. Rohingyas should be given shelter, food, security and treatment. But, at the same time, the government should mount pressure on Myanmar through diplomatic efforts to send them back to their country,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
As part of its countrywide programme, BNP formed a one-hour human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club protesting the repression on Rohingyas in Myanmar.
The party, however, alleged that police did not allow the BNP leaders and activists to hold their programmes in some districts.
The BNP leader said it is not necessary to inquire about the religion of the Rohingyas, but rather the concern should be that they are human beings.
“The Myanmar government has waged war against humanity and we have to resist this. Let us get united and raise our voice against the mass killing and force Myanmar to take them back,” he said.
He also expressed concern over the trespassing of Myanmar Air Force helicopter into Bangladesh airspace.
Meanwhile in Chittagong, the party's city unit at a human chain in front of its office in Kazir Dewry area urged the Myanmar government to stop oppression on the Rohingyas.
Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, organising secretary of the party, and Abul Hashem Bakkar, general secretary of BNP Chittagong city unit, were present.
Meanwhile, a clash ensued between police and BNP activists in Khagrachhari as the former allegedly obstructed a human chain programme of BNP in front of the press club, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.
At least 15 BNP activists, including Probin Chandra Chakma, vice president of BNP Khagrachhari unit, were injured, claimed Abu Taleb, its information secretary.
Contacted, Tareq Abdul Hannan, officer-in-charge of Khagrachhari Police Station, said, “As BNP did not take any prior permission for the programme, we prevented them.”
“At that time, BNP activists attacked us. So, we had to disperse them.”
Meanwhile, our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports that police have arrested two BNP leaders yesterday morning from a human chain formed in front of Brahmanbaria Press Club.
The arrestees are Ali Azam, mass education secretary of BNP's Brahmanbaria district unit, and Mohammad Mustafa, organising secretary of the district's Sramik Dal.
Jahirul Haque Khokon, general secretary of the district unit of BNP, said as part of the central programme, they formed the human chain. “Suddenly, police arrived and arrested two of our leaders.”
Contacted, Nabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station, said the two were arrested as part of their “special operation”.
