Five JU BCL men suspended
Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday suspended five Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men for beating up two JU correspondents in two separate incidents.
The decision was made at an emergency syndicate meeting on Monday night with Prof Farzana Islam in the chair, confirmed JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique.
“Two probe committees were also formed and asked to submit their results by 15 working days,” he added.
The five are: Mohitosh Roy Titu of history department, Ikram Uddin Omi of marketing, Iqram Nahid of statistics, Sharif Hossain Laskar of anthropology and Riyajul Islam of Bangla, he said.
Among them, Titu is a religious secretary and Omi is an assistant secretary of JU BCL unit while Iqram, Laskar and Riyajul are activists.
On June 4, some BCL activists led by Laskar beat up Abu Raihan, a JU correspondent of an online news portal over a previous enmity, while Raihan was going to his relative's house near Bismail area, said campus sources.
While, on June 8, some 10-12 BCL leaders and activists beat up Shafiqul Islam, a JU correspondent of another online news portal, when he tried to rescue a young woman from an alleged abductor, according to witnesses.
