Fishing cat gives birth at zoo
A fishing cat gave birth to two kittens at the zoo of Bangladesh Bonyo Prani Sheba Foundation in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar Wednesday.
The mother and kittens are in good condition, said Sajal Dev, director of the wild animal care foundation. Four years back the medium-sized wildcat was rescued by locals from Hailhaor of Sreemangal, he added. He said the mother and kittens will be released back into the wild soon. Another male fishing cat was being kept at the centre, with whom she mated.
After hearing the news, people thronged the zoo. As many were leaning forward to get a better look at the kittens, the mother cautiously sheltered them.
“These cats are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List,” said Tabibur Rahman, assistant conservator of wildlife at the forest department in Moulvibazar.
Fishing cats live foremost in the vicinity of wetlands, along rivers, streams, in swamps and mangroves.
