Fakhrul gets bail in bomb blast case
A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed over bomb blasts on December 9, 2012 during a road blockade.
On August 20 last year, Paltan police submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka against Fakhrul and 72 leaders and activists of the then BNP-led 18-party alliance for hurling bombs at policemen near BNP's Nayapaltan central office in the capital.
Yesterday, the Special Tribunal-13 of Dhaka fixed January 17, 2016 for hearing on charge framing against Fakhrul and others.
Meanwhile, the Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka fixed October 20 to deliver judgment in a corruption case against former Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
In the case, Khoka, also a BNP vice-chairman who is now staying in the USA for treatment, was earlier shown fugitive and the trial was held in his absence.
This is the first time that a court will deliver a judgment against Khoka, accused in a dozen of criminal cases.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on April 2, 2008 against Khoka, his wife Ishmat Ara, son Ishrak Hossain and daughter Sarika Sadeque for allegedly accumulating wealth worth over Tk 17.57 crore, which does not match his actual income, and concealing information about his wealth worth Tk 9,65,03,609.
The anti-graft body pressed charges against Khoka on July 2, 2008. But the investigation officer dropped the names of Khoka's son and daughter from the charge sheet as their involvement was not proven in the investigation.
The ACC could not press charge against Khoka's wife Ishmat Ara either as the High Court stayed the investigation against her after she filed a writ petition with it.
