'Factory machineries disappear,' workers agitate
Workers of an apparel factory clashed with police today in Mirpur-2 of Dhaka during protests after they found out their factory machineries “disappeared overnight”.
“We came this morning to see the factory closed,” Sonia, a worker of Rezaul Apparels now admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told reporters.
According to a worker, Sumi Begum, the factory, employing around 1,600 workers, was scheduled for relocation to Gazipur by February end. “We asked for compensation.”
“We talked with the authorities until 9:00pm last night. They agreed to compensate us. But this morning, we found the factory closed and all the machineries missing,” she said.
The workers blockaded the road leading to Mirpur zoo following a conflict with the owner of their factory, said Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bhuiyan Mahbub Hossain.
Scuffles have taken place with police and at least two people have been injured. They were taking treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Last reported around 2:25pm, the blockade was still underway with hundreds of apparel workers in tense stand-off with lawmen. Huge number of policemen was present. An armoured vehicle was also stationed nearby.
Meanwhile, no one from on behalf of the authorities could be found at the spot – in the 14-storied building that housed Rezaul Apparels upto the 10th floor.
