Extremist forces take advantage of 'lack' of democratic practice: Moudud
Senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed yesterday alleged that a "lack" of democratic practice, "suppression" of the opposition and "political vacuum" in the country has created opportunities for extremist forces to take advantage of the situation.
In order to contain and resist rising terrorism in Bangladesh, he suggested holding of free and fair election immediately in order to have an accountable and elected government and to unite people under a national platform.
He was delivering a lecture on "Security of Bangladesh in South Asian Context" organised by think-tank Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies at a hotel in Delhi.
The senior BNP leader said the terror attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia added "a new dimension in the security concerns of Bangladesh".
"These killings and the government's failure to track down the killers has caused a great amount of uncertainty, fear and a sense of insecurity in all sections of people," he said.
Moudud said Bangladesh and India will have to work together urgently, if necessary with international support, to eliminate forces of terrorism in this region.
