Eviction drive at Gulistan: DSCC faces resistance from hawkers
Authorities of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today faced resistance from hawkers during a drive to evict illegal structure on footpaths in Gulistan of Dhaka.
According to police and DSCC officials, the eviction team detained a hawker around 1:00pm for creating obstacles during the drive at the underpass market there.
Protesting the detention, agitated hawkers blockaded the road in front of the Nagar Bhaban for a few minutes, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station.
Later, they entered the premises of Nagar Bhaban chanting slogans against the eviction drive and locked into clash with law enforcers, the police official said.
More than one thousand hawkers took part in the agitation between 2:00pm and 2:30pm, according to an eyewitness.
The law enforcers fired several rounds of blank shots to disperse the protesters, Rafiqul added.
DSCC’s executive magistrate Khan Md Nazmus Soeb said his team members faced obstacles as they fined the hawkers for keeping goods and materials on the footpaths of the underpass and clearing the walkways there.
The protesters even put gates of the underpass market under lock and key, he said.
After visiting the spot, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon told reporters that there is a High Court order to clear footpaths for pedestrians and they will obey the order.
Legal action would be taken against those who will make obstacle during eviction drive, he said, vowing to continue the drive to clear the footpaths.
