EC asks home to ensure security
The Election Commission (EC) in a letter sent yesterday asked the home ministry to take necessary steps for ensuring security to minority communities ahead of the upcoming polls to district councils and Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC).
It is to ensure that none can destroy communal harmony using the district council election as a cover, it read. EC Secretary Muhammad Abdullah told The Daily Star last night that a similar letter was sent for the NCC polls a couple of days ago.
The EC sought special drives to recover illegal arms for holding the polls in a free and fair manner, the secretary informed.
Elections to NCC will be held on December 22, while the 61 district councils will go to polls on December 28.
The EC will also hold meetings with senior officials of the home ministry, law enforcement and intelligent agencies on December 10 at the capital's NEC conference room at 11:00am.
