EC announces drafts of 38 redrawn constituencies
The Election Commission (EC) yesterday disclosed the delimitation drafts of 38 constituencies, in 16 districts, out of the 300 constituencies in the country.
“The draft list has been published today and anyone having any objection or anything to say can appeal to the commission till 5:00pm on April 1,” Helal Uddin Ahmed, acting secretary of the EC made the announcement yesterday following a meeting of the election commissioners at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.
Once the objections are settled, the finalised list of constituencies will be published on April 30, he added.
The 38 delimited constituencies are Nilphamari 3, 4; Rangpur 1,3,4; Kurigram 3,4; Pabna 1,2; Magura 1,2; Khulna 3,4; Satkhira3,4; Jamalpur 4,5; Dhaka 2,3,7,14,19; Narayanganj 4,5; Shariatpur 2,3; Moulvibazar 2,4; Brahmanbaria 5,6; Comilla 1,2,6,10; Noakhali 4,5; and Chittagong 7 and 8.
The next parliamentary elections will be held under the finalised constituencies.
Last year, several registered political parties during their dialogues with the EC opposed any delimitation of constituencies ahead of the next national polls to avoid controversy and complexity.
However, a few other parties including the BNP proposed restoration of the constituencies to the pre-2008 state.
In 2008, the commission of ATM Shamsul Huda changed 133 constituencies extensively based on population.
In 2013, prior to the 10th parliamentary elections, the commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad redrew the boundaries of 87 constituencies.
