Duet closed indefinitely after violence
The Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (Duet) in Gazipur has been closed for an indefinite period after some students carried out vandalism on the campus on Tuesday night, demanding postponement of the second and third year exams.
The university authorities also asked male students to vacate their dormitories by 8:00am yesterday and female students by 8:00am today.
On Tuesday, a group of students went to Vice Chancellor Dr Alauddin and demanded deferment of the exams, which were supposed to start today. As their demand was turned down, the students blocked Dhaka-Shimultali highway in front of the campus.
The VC said when some teachers went to calm them down, the students started hurling projectiles at them, and around 10:00pm, they vandalised a few cars, CCTV cameras, and windowpanes of the administrative building, he said.
Police brought the situation under control around 11:00pm, he added.
