The programme, held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on the campus, started with observing a one-minute silence to show respect to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
Prof Shahjahan Miah, chairman of philosophy department at DU, received a medal on behalf of Prof Govinda Chandra Dev, while wards of the other martyred intellectuals received their medals.
In the programme, family members of the martyred teachers commemorated lifestyle, ideology and educational history of the teachers.
Asif Munir Tanmoy, son of Munier Chowdhury, said the university student should study the teachers' life thoroughly so that they can hold the teachers' ideology in their life.
“Most of the students of the university know Munier Chowdhury as the author of 'Kabar' and 'Roktakto Prantor'. The university should take step to spread his other writings as well…,” he added.
Speaking at the programme, Meghna Guhathakurata, daughter of Jyotirmoy Guhathakurta, expressed her gratitude to the alumni association for taking the initiative.
She expressed hope that DU would continue giving honour to the people who contributed to achieve an independent country.
“I hope the university will always remember the martyred teachers like this and will move forward by holding their spirit and ideology,” said Tanvir Haider Chowdhury, son of Prof Mofazzal Haider Chowdhury.
Attending the programme as the chief guest, prime minister's Energy Affairs Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said sacrifices of the intellectuals will not go in vain if the quality and environment of education of the university and the economic freedom of people are ensured.
DUAA President AK Azad presided over the programme. DU Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, Pro-VC Prof Nasreen Ahmad, and former DU VCS Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, Prof SMA Faiz, and Prof Abdul Mannan, were present, among others.

It is worth mentioning, a total of 1,111 people including 991 academicians were killed by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, most notably the extreme right-wing Islamist militia groups Al-Badr during the Liberation War of 1971. The largest number of executions took place on 25 March and 14 December 1971, as it became apparent that Bangladesh would become independent.
