DNCC installing 1,000 CCTV cameras for women's security
Dhaka North City Corporation is installing 1,000 high tech CCTV cameras in a bid to ensure safety and security of women on the streets, said DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq.
Mentioning that 600 cameras have already been installed, Annisul said they would complete installation of the rest of the cameras within the next three months.
He said these while addressing a discussion titled "Strong, Effective City Corporation, and Safe, Women Friendly Dhaka Metropolitan," organised by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) at the capital's Cirdap auditorium yesterday.
BMP President Ayesha Khanam presided over the discussion.
The mayor said the whole city would be brought under LED light coverage by June of the next year, adding, "Once the installation of those LED lights and powerful cameras is completed, our mothers and sisters will feel secure when they go outside their homes…"
A DNCC female ward councillor, Shanaz Parvin Mitu, demanded for an equal treatment with their male counterparts.
"Our territory is vast. We work hard but don't get proper recognition," said Masuda Aktar, another DNCC ward councillor.
There are 36 male councillors for the same number of wards under DNCC whereas the number of female ones is only 12 (one female councillor for every three wards).
Toufique Imrose Khalidi, editor-in-chief of bdnews24.com, said though female ward councillors were somewhat empowered, their power was not proportionate to their male counterparts.
While giving a keynote presentation, Kazi Sufia Akhtar, movement Secretary of BMP central committee, demanded playgrounds, libraries, hostels, public transports, toilets and security for women.
