Dipan murder sparks anger, outcry
A faction of Gonojagoron Mancha and several other organisations yesterday demonstrated in the capital in protest against killing of publisher Dipan and attacks on three others.
From a rally in Shahbagh, Gonojagoron Mancha also called a countrywide six-hour hartal for tomorrow.
Its activists will mourn the death across the country today by wearing black badges. A torch procession will also be brought out at Shahbagh demanding trial of the perpetrators, said Imran H Sarker, spokesperson of the faction.
“The hartal will be called off if law enforcers can arrest the culprits within 24 hours,” he told the rally.
Several human rights activists, Dhaka University teachers Abul Barakat, Fahmidul Haq, Tanjimuddin Khan, columnist Abul Maksud, and politicians also joined the rally.
They condemned the murder and stressed a unity to prevent militancy as, what they said, such attacks were repeatedly being launched on freethinkers due to the government's failure to provide security.
Later, a protest procession was brought out in Shahbagh area.
Leaders from Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier in the morning,
Progotishil Chhatra Jote and Sammrajjobad Birodhi Chhatra Oikya, two alliances of 14 left leaning student organisations, brought out a procession on the DU campus.
From another demonstration under the banner of “Agitating Teacher-Student-Writer and Citizen”, DU teacher Samina Lutfa announced forming a human chain at Aparajeya Bangla of DU this morning.
Owner of Jagriti Prokashoni Faisal Arefin Dipan was stabbed to death at Aziz Market in Shahbagh following attacks on another publisher Ahmedur Rashid Tutul of Shuddhoswar and two bloggers Ranadipam Basu and Tareque Rahim in the same manner in Lalmatia on Saturday.a
