DIG asked to explain fettered prisoners at court
The High Court today summonsed the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of prisons in Dhaka to appear before it on March 9 for explaining why four under-trial prisoners were sent to the court in fetters.
The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath passed the order when the fettered prisoners were produced before the court.
The police official concerned of Keraniganj jail, who brought the four prisoners to the HC, told the court that the jail authorities have sent them in fetters.
Usually, an accused is not produced before a court in fetters.
The four prisoners are: Habibur Rahman, Moniruzzaman, Nasiruddin and Giasuddin, who have been suffering in jail for more than 10 years in separate criminal cases.
They were produced before the HC as per its suo moto order issued on February 7.
Meanwhile, six other under-trial prisoners were also produced before the HC bench today.
They are: Faruk Hossain, Selim Mia, Raju Jagannath, Haider Ali, Boshir Uddin and Rafuqul Islam Raja, all languishing in the jail for more than ten years in separate criminal cases against them.
The HC asked the lower court concerned to finish the trail proceedings of the case against Faruk Hossain in next three months and to consider his bail.
The HC passed the order as the case record of Faruk was produced before the court.
As records of the cases of nine other accused were not submitted before the court today despite an HC order, the HC asked the authorities for submission on March 9.
