Dictionaries abound at book fair
History serves as a lighthouse to the new generation to find out the right path in the world of knowledge; that's why, people's quest to learn history is everlasting.
This is an excerpt from the preface of Bangla Academy's "Oitihasik Ovidhan" (dictionary of history), which is selling at the Amar Ekushey Granthamela for history lovers.
The tome chronicles significant events that occurred around the world. It begins at 1635 BC when Ahmose I founded Dynasty XVIII in Egypt and concludes at 1950 AC when people experienced a fatal earthquake in Assam.
The dictionary was edited by Manjurur Rahman and collected by Motior Rhaman.
Ruhul Amin Talukder, a visitor, said, “I bought this as it will help me prepare for government jobs.”
“The book seems interesting. I believe I will enjoy it,” he added.
Bangla Academy is also selling dictionaries on science, law, literature, music, botany and social science. This year it has brought out "Adhunik Bangla Ovidhan".
At around 3:00pm yesterday, over 50 visitors were seen gathered around a pavilion of Bangla Academy at Suhrawardy Udyan, mostly buying dictionaries.
“We rely upon Bangla Academy [dictionaries] to learn correct spelling of words,” said Sohrab Hossain, who bought a copy of "Bangla Academy Baboharik Bangla Ovidhan" for his son.
For the students of business studies and businesspeople, Bangla Academy published "Baboshay Poribhasha", where business jargons are translated in Bangla.
Over the years, Bangla words have evolved. The academy has brought out a compilation of these words in three volumes titled "Bangla Academy Bibortonmulok Ovidhan".
Considering the demand of dictionaries, Bangla Academy has set up a dedicated stall at Suhrawardy Udyan where only dictionaries are sold.
A total of 280 new books were published yesterday.
