Demos held in Dhaka, Ctg as probe sees no headway in 1yr
Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Sena and Bangladesh Islami Jubo Sena demonstrated in Dhaka and Chittagong yesterday protesting a delay in Faruqi murder investigation.
Shaikh Nurul Islam Faruqi, 60, former presidium member of Bangladesh Islami Front (BIF), was killed as unidentified assailants slit his throat at his East Rajabazar house in the capital on August 27 last year.
In Dhaka, pro-BIF student organisation Islami Chhatra Sena rallied before Jatiya Press Club, reports our staff correspondent.
It also demanded immediate removal of the home minister for being failed to bring Faruqi's killers to book in one year.
BIF president Nurul Huq Chisti said the government had little commitment to ensure justice for the murder.
The family told The Daily Star that he was killed by Islamist groups whose religious views were different from his.
“It seems as though the law enforcers as well as the authorities have conveniently forgotten about Faruqi,” said his wife Lubna.
Additional deputy commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ashikur Rahman, who is supervising the investigation, admitted that the investigation found no headway so far but he added that the crime might have been committed by Islamist militants.
Our staff correspondent from Chittagong adds, the Chhatra Sena and Bangladesh Islami Jubo Sena, the youth wing of BIF, organised symbolic road blockades from 12:00 noon to 12:10pm around 100 spots in and outside the city.
Its activists also brought out processions and gave a 13-day ultimatum to the government to arrest the murderers of Faruqi, also then international affairs secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat. Syed Abu Azam, general secretary of the city unit of the Jubo Sena, said police could not arrest anyone yet.
