Demand for Sust VC's removal rolls into 10th day
Some 35 Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) teachers under the banner “Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhokbrindo” staged a sit-in before the vice chancellor's (VC) office for the 10th consecutive day yesterday demanding his removal.
During the eight-hour demonstration starting 8:00am, some 70-80 Bangladesh Chhatra League men arrived around 11:00am and chanted slogans against the demonstrators. They left on being asked by Shikkhok Samity President Prof M Kabir Hossain.
Prof Kabir told The Daily Star that Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid had sent him a letter on Tuesday asking to take initiatives and bring back normalcy through unity. However, Prof Kabir himself is seeking the government's intervention.
The removal demand arose after April 13 when 19 teachers of departments including physics and forestry and environmental science went to meet VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan to discuss about allocation of space but returned claiming he had misbehaved with them.
The VC said he could not give them enough time that day for he was being troubled by family issues. He took two months' leave and returned on June 22.
