Death toll has fallen
Death toll in road crashes reduced last year compared to 2015, but still stood high, claimed a Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association report yesterday.
Around 6,055 people died and 15, 914 were injured in 4,312 road accidents in last year where 8,642 were killed and 21, 855 injured in 6,581 incidents in 2015, it said.
The association's secretary general Mojammel Haque Chowdhury presented the report, based on news items published in 10 national dailies, six local dailies, six online and several TV channels, at a press conference at the capital's Jatiya Press Club.
Reckless driving, unfit vehicles, unlicensed drivers, engineering fault in road, violation of traffic rules, and insufficient footpaths, among others, contribute to accident, it observed.
The report also came up with some recommendations to minimise road accidents, which include conducting massive campaign for raising awareness, training up drivers, freeing the illegally-occupied footpaths, and updating motor vehicle laws.
