A death pit
Illegal stone extraction in Sylhet claimed life of another person in Bichnakandi area of Gowainghat upazila yesterday.
The deceased is Ruhen Ahmed, 22, son of Jalal Uddin of Chhoto Sakua village under Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj.
With yesterday's fatality, the death toll has already risen to 10 this year while it was 32 last year, according to media reports.
Yesterday, the worker was extracting stones from a trench. Suddenly, a landslide hit the pit, leaving him seriously injured, said Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gowainghat Police Station, quoting witnesses.
He died while being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The OC said his body will be returned to his family after an autopsy.
Over the years, stone extraction at various illegal quarries has risen alarmingly at Companiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintiyapur and Kanaighat upazilas of Sylhet district.
Not just to the workers, this illegal activity is also a threat to the environment.
