Deal signed to introduce insurance for workplace injuries
Germany, Bangladesh and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have signed a tripartite deal to establish a "National Employment Injury Insurance System" in Bangladesh.
Visiting German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dr Gerd Müller, Secretary to the Ministry of Labour and Employment Mikail Shipar and Country Director of the ILO Srinivas B Reddy signed the Letter of Intent (LoI) at a ceremony at a hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday.
According to the letter, the parties will design a suitable insurance system for injuries sustained at workplace, draft and establish a legal framework of this by 2016, and ensure the capacity development and implementation of the system in Bangladesh, said a German embassy press release.
This would further strengthen the country's garment sector and improve the industry's safety condition.
Earlier, German Minister Müller arrived in the capital on Tuesday for a two-day visit to Bangladesh. A 10-member delegation, including Parliamentary State Secretary for Economic Cooperation and Development Hans-Joachim Fuchtel, is accompanying him.
