DCC polls: Mintoo, Pintu’s nominations cancelled
The nominations of five mayor aspirants for two Dhaka city corporations, including BNP leader Abdul Awal Mintoo and Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu, were cancelled today.
While Mintoo’s nomination was cancelled for procedural flaws, that of Pintu was found invalid for providing wrong information.
Meanwhile, Mintoo's Secretary Abdullah Al Harun Sohel said the BNP leader will appeal tomorrow to the Dhaka divisional commissioner who is the appellate authority for the Dhaka city polls, seeking validation of his nomination.
The EC decisions came during scrutiny of the nomination papers submitted for the much-talked-about elections to the bifurcated Dhaka city corporation, which are scheduled for April 28.
Nominations of two mayoral candidates of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), out of total 21 including Mintoo, were cancelled during the scrutiny.
Mintoo’s nomination was cancelled as the supporter of the nominee is not a voter of the city corporation area, which is mandatory for the candidate, Returning Officer Shah Alam said.
Another mayor aspirant Md Nayeem Hasan’s nomination was cancelled for his bankruptcy, the returning officer told reporters at his office.
Meanwhile, the nomination of Pintu, a mayor aspirant from Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), was cancelled as he is a convicted accused in BDR mutiny case, said an official of DNCC.
The reasons of cancelling nominations of two others DNCC candidates could not be known immediately.
