Ctg rivers in peril
The rivers in Chittagong are in perilous condition as no significant protection measures had been taken under the master plan of 1995, said speakers at a meeting at Chittagong University (CU) yesterday.
The master plan of 1995 which included solutions for water logging, and pollution and navigability of the Karnaphuli river is yet to be implemented, said CU Vice-Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury at the meeting, organised by CU Halda Research Laboratory marking World Rivers Day.
The Halda river, the country's largest natural breeding ground for carps, is also under threat due to manmade hazards, including industrial waste, sewage contamination and sand extraction, said microbiology Professor Abul Manchur.
The situation became worse due to the rapid increase in tobacco farming near the river in recent years which threatens the unique biochemical properties of the water that support existence of these fish, he added.
The rivers are being filled up while illegal encroachment and building structures on the river banks are obstructing the natural water flow, mentioned the speakers, adding that the authorities concerned should take all possible steps to save the rivers.
Around 50 teachers and students participated in the meeting.
