Country's first ever online reproductive, sexual health master's prog launched
The first ever online master's programme on sexual and reproductive health was launched for the midwives in Bangladesh.
Swedish Dalarna University will host the course, which will be coordinated by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Nursing Services and support from the Swedish government, said a UNFPA press statement yesterday.
Thirty two students from 15 nursing institutes have been enrolled, which will help the graduates hold teaching and leadership positions, it added.
“This further education will serve as pillars for building the midwife profession and for building a healthier Bangladesh,” said UNFPA Chief of Health Dr Sathya Doraiswamy at the launch at Dhaka Nursing College.
Marcela Lizano, first secretary at the Embassy of Sweden, highlighted how midwives can contribute towards achieving women's right to health.
Some 170 of every one lakh women die from pregnancy-related complications, 83,100 babies are stillborn and there are yearly 76,000 neonatal deaths in Bangladesh, which could be prevented through more educated midwives, the statement said.
Global evidence shows that professional midwives deliver the most effective sexual reproductive, maternal and newborn health interventions, and are able to avert 30 percent of maternal deaths in countries like Bangladesh, it said.
