Choked traffic mounts sufferings on public
It was an afternoon of sufferings for the commoners in Dhaka city today – for the tailback caused during ruling party’s reception programme for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Since mid-afternoon, activists of the Awami League and affiliates lined up on city streets – from Dhaka airport to Gono Bhaban – to accord a grand reception for the premier.
Choked in the anomalous programme, traffic came to standstill from a long stretch of road through Shahbagh to Tongi and several other adjoining areas, according to commuters.
Aleya Akhter, 35, headed out for Savar from Kathalbagan at 4:00pm. By 5:30pm, she was walking near Jahangir Gate towards Mohakhali after waiting in futile for transport.
“This is too much suffering,” she said while talking to The Daily Star.
Today, despite being a weekend, was expected to be in tantrums because of the ongoing university admission programmes and Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations.
Habibur Rahman, a BCS candidate, had the day of his life today because he was moving to Gazipur from Shyamoli after his exams. He was seen helpless at Mohakhali around 6:20pm with load and luggage.
“If I can’t make it to Sreepur by 9:00pm, I will have to starve tonight,” he said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 6:45pm and reached Gono Bhaban at 7:30pm.
