Charge framing date against Dr Shahadat deferred
A Chittagong court yesterday deferred the date of charge framing in a case filed under the Special Power Act against BNP city unit President Dr Shahadat Hossain and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal city unit President Gazi Md Siraz Ullah.
Hefajat-e- Islami Nayeb-e- Ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury is also a charge sheeted accused in the case.
The court earlier fixed yesterday for charge framing in the case.
Defense lawyer Mafizul Haque Bhiyan told The Daily Star that as five accused in the case were absent, Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Salem Mohammad Noman deferred the date.
Time petitions on behalf of the five, were also submitted before the court, Mafizul said.
However, Dr Shahadat, Gazi Md Siraz and Mufti Izharul were present before the court during the hearing yesterday, court sources said.
Informing another petition was submitted before the court seeking discharge of Dr Shahadat from the case, the defense lawyer said the court will fix another date for charge framing and on that day hearing on the petition would also be held.
According to the case document and police sources, on May 28 in 2013, during a procession in support of a hartal enforced by BNP and its allies, the activists of the party clashed with police in Nasiman Bhaban area in the city.
Sub-Inspector Md Kamruzzaman of Kotwali Police Station filed a case against 12 named and 150 unnamed persons, including Dr Shahadat and Gazi Md Siraz, on charge of preventing police from discharging their duties, blasting crude bombs and creating panic among people.
On April 11 in 2015, SI Safiqul Islam of the station submitted the charge sheet, said court sources.
