The local government rural development and cooperatives ministry yesterday suspended Jahangir Alam, chairman of Shikalbaha Union Parishad under Chittagong's Karnaphuli upazila, for being an accused in a case filed for allegedly foiling a Victory Day programme on December 16.
It issued a gazette notification, signed by Dr Syeda Naoshin Parnini, senior assistant secretary to the ministry, in this regard. The notice reached the Chittagong Deputy Commissioner's office yesterday.
Jahangir was also issued a show-cause notice to explain within 10 working days why he should not be dismissed from his post for his alleged involvement in criminal activities.
He could not be reached for comments as he did not answer his phone.
Jahangir, also a member of Karnaphuli upazila unit AL, allegedly foiled a celebration programme in Chittagong for not getting an invitation letter.
Karnaphuli Upazila Administration organised the event at AJ Chowdhury Degree College, said UNO Bijen Banarjee.
Jahangir along with his men, armed with sticks, swooped on the programme. They vandalised chairs and microphone on the allegation that they were not invited, he said. Bijen claimed that he had sent an invitation letter to Jahangir.
On December 20, a case was filed against Jahangir and some 500 unknown persons with Patiya Police Station.
