Cancel acquisition of homesteads, farmlands
Ignoring incessant rainfall, thousands of char people yesterday brought out a huge procession from Joy Bangla Bazar in Mymensingh Sadar upazila demanding removal of their farmlands and homesteads from the acquisition list of land to be acquired for development work in the district's Char Shirta union.
“Basatbhita Rokhha Committee” organised the procession that paraded through Char Gobindapur, Char Anandipur, Char Bhawanipur, Char Durgapur and Konapara villages in the union.
The local administration first prepared a list of 1220-acre land for infrastructure development but it was later cancelled and a list of 4366-acre was released without any valid reason, said the char people who have been protesting for around eight months.
The latest proposed acquisition area includes vast tracts of farmlands and households where most people are small and marginal farmers and sharecroppers, they informed.
At a rally, the demonstrators also alleged that an influential quarter was behind making the latest list. They urged the administration to use Khas ad empty land on both side of the river Brahmaputra for the development.
Committee Convener Prof Syed Mosharraf Hossain spoke among others.
