Cabinet nods signing nuke prohibition treaty
The cabinet yesterday approved a proposal for signing the "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons", a legally-binding instrument of the United Nations for nuclear disarmament.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will sign the treaty on behalf of Bangladesh during the 72nd UN General Assembly to be held later this month in New York, Cabinet Secretary Shafiul Alam said while briefing reporters at the Secretariat following the cabinet meeting at the PMO.
The United Nations adopted the treaty in July this year with 122 votes, including that of Bangladesh, in favour and one against. One vote was not cast due to abstention. The cabinet also approved the draft of "Air Services Agreement between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates". Both the countries signed such agreement in 1988.
Under the proposed new agreement, apart from the national flag carriers of Bangladesh and the UAE, more than one flight operators -- nominated by the respective countries -- would be able to operate flights.
The agreement will have both Bangla and Arabic versions, the cabinet secretary said, adding that as per the proposed rules, the civil aviation authorities of the country will have the power to cancel operations of an airline in case of noncompliance to the rules.
During the meeting, the Planning Division informed the cabinet of the preparations Bangladesh has so far made to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030, Shafiul said.
Bangladesh's progress towards attaining the SDGs is so far satisfactory and the country is ahead of many other countries in this regard, he claimed. "We've almost achieved cent percent of the MDGs and our position is also good regarding the SDGs."
Shafiul also said the government has recently submitted a Voluntary National Report to the UN headquarters on the SDGs.
The cabinet also adopted a resolution expressing profound shock at the death of renowned Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra singer Abdul Jabbar.
