BNP urges govt not to increase power tariffs
The government is trying to hike the price of electricity but it will adversely affect the country's people and economy, said BNP yesterday.
Urging the government to refrain from such a move, party Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, “I, on behalf of BNP, strongly condemn and protest the illogical decision of hiking power tariffs again.”
He was addressing a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters.
The BNP leader said energy experts already warned that if power tariffs are increased many mills and factories will be shut down.
Terming electricity lifeline of economy, Rizvi said price hike of electricity will affect industry, production, infrastructure development, household management, business and agriculture. “The cost of living will also be multiplied.”
Citing media reports, Rizvi said the two city corporations raised holding taxes. “It will increase house rent, creating a chaos.”
Rizvi alleged that the government became desperate to impose various taxes and increase prices of different utility services to plunder public money.
