BNP leader confesses to attack on Hindus
A BNP leader in a confessional statement before a court in Rangpur on Sunday admitted his involvement in the attack at Thakurpara, a Hindus village in Rangpur Sadar upazila.
The leader was identified as Masud Rana, former president of Khaleya union BNP unit.
Masud Rana gave his statement under 164 before the senior judicial magistrate's court of Ariful Islam on Sunday evening, said Hasan Ali, a sub-inspector (SI) of Gangachara Police Station and an investigation officer (IO) of the case.
The court also ordered police to send him to jail.
On January 28, police arrested Masud from Shaleya Shah Bazaar in Rangpur Sadar upazila and produced him before the same court with a seven-day remand prayer. But the court granted five-day remand for him.
Police on Sunday produced Masud before the court as during the remand he agreed to give his confessional statement before the court.
Masud gave some important information to police during the remand that will help investigators conduct the probe smoothly, claimed SI Hasan Ali.
Forty-year-old Titu was arrested on November 14 last year in connection with a case filed over “demeaning Islam” in a Facebook post. The case was filed with Gangachara Police Station on November 6, and later transferred to the DB.
Protesting the Facebook post, hundreds of zealots attacked Thakurpara village in Rangpur on November 10. They torched 11 Hindu houses, vandalised many others and looted valuables.
A man was killed and about 20 others were injured after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Titu denied the allegation against him, said his brother Bipul Chandra Roy.
Fazlar Rahman, a sub-assistant engineer of Rangpur Zila Parishad, who is also the prime accused in the case, is now in Rangpur jail.
