Biharis protest eviction plan
Bihari people living at two camps in the capital's Mirpur area demonstrated yesterday after knowing that Pallabi police would conduct an eviction drive in the area in line with a High Court order.
Police fixed tomorrow to evict people from FG Camp and MCC Camp in the area, said Dadon Fakir, officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station.
"There are 32 plots in the area, allotted by National Housing Authority to the authorised owners," Dadon told The Daily Star.
Manzoor Reza Khan, organising secretary of Urdu Speaking Peoples Youth Rehabilitation Movement (USPYRM), said, "Around 700 families have long been living in the two camps. We will not leave the place unless we are rehabilitated."
On March 29, the HC ordered eviction against the camps. Following an appeal filed by the camps' leaders, the Supreme Court asked both the parties to maintain status quo until the disposal of a leave-to-appeal petition, Reza claimed.
He added that they would continue demonstrating if the eviction drive was carried out.
When asked about the SC order on maintaining status quo, Dadon claimed that the Biharis could not show them any document of the SC order.
