Banshkhali criminal gets 10yrs in jail in arms case
A court in Chittagong yesterday sentenced a convicted criminal to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment in a case filed for illegal possession of arms in 2013.
The convict is Morshedul Islam, 38, a local criminal of Banshkhali upazila.
Additional District Judge 7th Ferdous Ara announced the verdict after the accused person was found guilty beyond doubt in the arms case, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Rubel Pal.
The convict is now behind the bar because he is convicted in three other cases, he said.
Morshed faces charges in 16 other cases including murder, extortion, dowry, and snatching, the lawyer said, adding that all cases were under trial.
According to the statement of the arms case, on information, police recovered a homemade one-barrel gun and a cartridge from the bank of a pond in Chambal union of Banskhali on July 22, 2013, and arrested Morshed. Later, the arrestee confessed that he had hid the arm and cartridge there.
A sub-inspector filed an arms case with Banshkhali Police Station and submitted the charge sheet on August 11, 2013. He was indicted on March 13, 2014.
The prosecutor said eight witnesses out of 11 had testified before the court in the case.
