Apan Jewellers couldn’t submit legal documents of gold
The owners of Apan Jewellers could not produce any valid documents of 498 Kg gold seized from its five outlets in Dhaka before customs intelligence today.
Earlier in the day, three owners of Apon Jewellers appeared before the Customs Intelligence and Investigations Directorate (CIID) three days after being asked to show up the documents, customs intelligence officials said.
The authority, however, gave them five more days till May 23 to submit necessary papers after the owners sought for more time, said Mainul Khan, director general of CIID.
“If they fail to submit the documents, legal steps will be taken against them,” he said.
Apan Jewellers owners -- Dildar Ahmed and his two brothers, Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed -- reached the CIID office around 11:30am, a customs official, seeking anonymity, told The Daily Star.
Among the three owners, Dildar is the father of Shafat Ahmed who is the prime accused of Banani rape case.
Meanwhile, two lawyers, on behalf of the owner of The Raintree Dhaka hotel, went to the CIID officials and sought more time as “the hotel owner is sick and failed to appear before it”.

While coming out of the office this noon, Zahangir Kabir, one of the two lawyers, told reporters the CIID officials gave Raintree hotel owner and managing director Shah Adnan Harun five days more to appear before them.
CIID officials on May 15 summoned the Apan Jewellers' owners, a day after they launched drives simultaneously at the brand's five outlets in Gulshan, Uttara, Mouchak and Shimanto Square.
The Apan Jewellers authorities could not provide valid documents of all the gold and diamonds in the stores.
Customs intelligence officials carried out the raids amid allegations that Shafat bragged about being a gold smuggler to the victims.
The CIID is looking into the sources of the gold and diamonds and investigating whether any taxes were dodged.
On Sunday, a team of the CIID raided The Raintree Dhaka hotel and seized 10 bottles of liquor from a room. The hotel doesn't have any licence for selling liquor. It has so far collected Tk 8.37 lakh in VAT from customers, but paid only Tk 9,326 to the government.
