Action if JnU students found guilty
The Jagannath University students responsible for assaulting an on-duty traffic sergeant will face punitive action, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday.
“I want to say it clearly that no one is above the law. Police will take action against the responsible persons through investigation,” he said in reply to a query at a programme at DMP headquarters.
An attempt to murder case was filed with Ramna Police Station on Tuesday against 30 to 40 anonymous JnU students and three bus drivers over beating a traffic sergeant for stopping three university buses travelling on the wrong side in the capital on Monday.
In the case statement, sergeant Kawsar Hamid said drivers of three BRTC double-decker buses carrying JnU students towards Farmgate drove through the wrong side on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue at Bangla Motor intersection around 5:00pm.
Earlier, DMP officials held a meeting with the university authorities and expressed their concern over the incident.
“If the buses of this institution, which has a long heritage, drive through the wrong side, people will also be motivated to violate traffic rules,” Asaduzzaman said and hoped that such incident would not recur.
Meanwhile, a section of JnU students yesterday staged a demonstration on the campus over the filing of the case. They said the Jnu students did not assault any police official but locked in an altercation with the sergeant on that day.
They criticised the police authorities for filing an attempt to murder case over a “trivial matter”.
Charge Sheet in Dhaka Café Attack Soon
In the programme, the commissioner also said the charge sheet in the Holey Artisan attack case will be placed before the court very soon.
He said police questioned Sohel Mahfuz and came to know more about his involvement and responsibilities. Sohel allegedly supplied firearms and explosives for the Holey Artisan Café attack in Gulshan. He is also one of the prime accused in a case filed over the 2014 Burdwan blast in India.
