9.3kg gold recovered at Sylhet Airport
Customs officials recovered 80 gold bars weighing over nine kilogrammes from a Biman flight at MAG Osmani Airport in Sylhet this morning.
The gold bars were found inside four bags hidden under VIP seats of an aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines which came from UAE, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting Shafiqul Islam, commissioner of the Customs, Excise and VAT in Sylhet.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of custom officials conducted a drive inside the Biman flight BG 228 at 6:30am and recovered the gold bars weighing nine kilogrammes and 300 grams hidden under two VIP seats wrapped up with a piece of paper, the customs commissioner said.
The smugglers used Sylhet as their route and they might have been trying to transport the shipment worth Tk 4.5 crore to somewhere else using domestic flights, he also said.
The authorities were investigating into the matter, the customs official added.
