7 Khulna men charged with war crimes
The prosecution yesterday filed charges against seven Khulna men for their alleged involvement in four specific incidents of crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.
The crimes include killing, abduction, looting, arson, and deportation.
Prosecutors Mukhlesur Rahman Badal and Sabina Yesmin Khan Munni submitted the charges and other documents through the registrar office of the tribunal.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 is scheduled to hear the related case on Sunday.
Six of the accused are Shahar Ali, Amzad Hossain Hawlader, Mozahar Ali Sheikh, Atiar Sheikh, Motasim Billah, and Kamal Uddin Goldar. A seventh accused, Nazrul Islam, is yet to be arrested. All seven are from Batiaghata upazila in Khulna.
The investigation agency found involvement of eight persons including the seven in crimes committed during the Liberation War, but the prosecution did not charge Abdul Ashraf Sheikh as he died on June 5, said Prosecutor Munni.
Meanwhile, the tribunal directed its registrar office to publish advertisements in two national dailies asking two fugitive accused from Satkhira to appear before the tribunal within December 6.
They are Khan Rokonuzzaman, 64, and Jahirul Islam alias Jahirul Haque alias Tikka Khan, 65.
Two other accused of the case are Abdul Khaleq Mandol, 72, chief of Satkhira Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker, and M Abdullah Al Baki alias Abdullah Hel Baki, 102.
Of them, Khaleq is now in jail while Baki was released on bail. All of the accused are from Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
The prosecution filed seven charges against the four on March 19, which included killing, torture, and rape in Satkhira Sadar and Ashashuni upazila of the district.
