7 hurt as Rangpur transport workers clash
At least seven people were injured in a clash between two groups of pro-Awami League transport workers' union in Rangpur city yesterday.
Of them, Shahjahan Mia, Farid Hossain, Razu Ahmed and Suruj Ali took first aid treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
According to police, Anil Chandra Roy, secretary of Awami Motor Driver League, was beaten by criminals on October 20 and is now being treated at RMCH.
Protesting the attack, Motor Driver League brought out a procession from station road. Near Shapla intersection, a group of Rangpur Motor Sramik Union intercepted them, prompting a clash between the two groups.
Roadside traders closed their shops. Later, Rangpur Sadar upazila police brought the situation under control.
Abdul Majid, secretary of the sramik union, said they heard of the incident but none of his members was involved.
Sources said the two groups have been fighting over collecting tolls from truck and bus owners of different routes.
