4,000kg of turtle shells seized in Ctg
Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Chittagong of the Forest Department on Tuesday seized 4,000kg of turtle shells in Khulshi area of the port city.
Tipped-off, a forest department team with the help of law enforcement personnel seized the turtle shells kept inside 142 sacks from the ground floor of a building in the area, said the forest department sources.
No one was arrested, they added.
“An organisation named Fish Mark Export stored the turtle shells in the name of dry fish for smuggling those to Hong Kong,” said Divisional Forest Officer SM Golam Mowla.
Shells of three kinds of rare turtle species -- sweet water Ganga Kachim (soft shell turtle), Yellow Pahari Kachim (elongated tortoise) and Bara Kaittya (river terrapin) were recovered, said the forest official.
He said an investigation is underway.
