30 BCL men held at CU
Police detained at least 30 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday when raiding Shahjalal Hall and Shah Amanat Hall of Chittagong University (CU).
They also recovered 30 machetes and two sacks of brickbats and iron rods from the dormitories, said Rezaul Masud, additional superintendent of police of Chittagong.
Police detained the BCL men following a chase and counter-chase between followers of BCL CU unit president Mohammad Alamgir Tipu and those of general secretary Fazly Rabby Sujan over establishing supremacy on the campus, said campus sources.
Witnesses said the chase and counter-chase occurred around 11:30am when BCL activist Fahim Hasan, loyal to Tipu, was "beaten by Sujan's followers" over an altercation.
Later, police brought the situation under control with permission from the university authorities and deployed additional policemen.
Sujan alleged, "Police attacked our activists during the raid."
"We will go for a tough movement if actions are not taken against the policemen responsible," he added.
On Thursday, at least 19 BCL activists were injured in a clash between the two factions.
