3 CPA engineers face bribery allegations
An enlisted contractor of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) lodged a complaint with a court yesterday, accusing three engineers of the organisation of demanding Tk 2 lakh as bribe and physically assaulting him.
The contractor, Hazi Mohammad Ilius, who claimed to be involved with the ruling Awami League, was, however, sued by one of the engineers earlier.
The three are Marine Workshop Deputy Chief Engineer Emdadul Haque, Executive Engineer (Marine) Mohammad Mohiuddin, and Executive Engineer Mohamamd Asif Mahmud.
The complaint filed with Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court says CPA published an advertisement on its website on December 28, 2016, inviting bids for procurement of parts for two light vessels. On the very day, the contractor went to the engineers' office, but the accused told him that the bidding process was stopped and that the tender would be sold if he paid them bribe, it adds. The engineers also assaulted him, it says.
Receiving the complaint, the court asked the police commissioner and divisional director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to inform it whether the complainant went to a police station and the ACC office before coming to the court, said complainant's lawyer Rafiqul Alam.
On December 28, Emdad filed a case against contractor Ilius for physically assaulting the engineer. Ilius was sent to jail on January 18, but has come out on bail recently.
Denying the allegations, engineer Emdad said Ilius filed the complaint for harassing them.
