20 hurt as police, protesters clash over gas crisis
At least 20 people, including six policemen, were injured in a clash between locals and law enforcers as the residents besieged a dyeing factory over gas crisis in Jalkuri area of Narayanganj's Siddirganj yesterday.
Police charged the protesters with batons and fired blank shots as they also ransacked the factory and vandalised some vehicles, said police.
Locals claimed the gas crisis was created in the area as the factory, Dwip Joy, is taking gas from the line fixed for residential areas.
They informed the local authorities of it, but to no avail, they said.
The factory owner Nazmul Ahsan Khan, however, said they were operating the factory by brining gas from local CNG stations but the locals attacked his factory being misled. He warned of taking legal action in this regard.
Before demonstrating, the locals announced to gather at the spot through a mike of a local mosque, said police.
Md Zakaria, an additional superintend of police in Narayanganj, said the situation was brought under control.
