18 containers seized at Ctg port for false declaration
Customs intelligence officials at Chittagong Port yesterday seized 18 containers of imported limestone and calcium carbonate, which were imported through false declaration to evade tax.
The importing firm, Quality Breeder Limited of Bogra, declared it was importing 506 tonnes of poultry feed, which is taxed at five percent, said Morshed Ali Chowdhury, revenue officer at Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, Chittagong.
Clearing and forwarding agent Sadhin Enterprise submitted the bill of entry against the consignment on December 28.
However, on information, members of the directorate on Tuesday intercepted delivery of the containers from Chittagong Port and sent samples from those for testing, said Morshed.
After testing they found the containers contained 336 tonnes of limestone, which is taxed at 31 percent, in 12 containers and 168 tonnes of calcium carbonate, taxed at 37 percent, in six containers, he added.
The official said legal action would be taken against the importing firm.
