14 held for giving false job assurance
The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained 14 persons allegedly for deceiving people by giving them false assurance of jobs in the capital's Mirpur on Sunday.
The detainees are Faruk Hossain, Jahurul Islam Khoka, Kamrul Islam, Abdul Majid, Monirul Islam, Mohibul Islam, Sumon, Yunus Ali, Nurunnabi, Tyab Hossain, Shahidul Islam Sumon, Shimul Hasan, Kibria and Asma Aktar.
Rab officials said on information, a team of Rab-4 raided different areas in Mirpur DOHS on that day and detained them.
During primary interrogation, some of the detainees admitted taking money from people who were less educated and from needy families, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Mahfuza Khatun, operations officer of Rab-4.
She said the gang used to publish ads in newspapers announcing employment opportunities and asking them to face interview.
Later, they took Tk 3,000 to 15,000 from the job seekers after giving them fake appointment letters. And by doing so, they have taken away about Tk 200 crore from more than 2 lakh people over the last three to four years, claimed Rab officials, based on information provided by the detainees and their own investigation.
Maj Abu Sayeed Khan, who led the drive, said they seized several documents from an office of the detainees.
Quoting some of the detainees, Mahfuza said the gang used to run offices on temporary basis in the city and frequently changed locations.
Legal process is underway against the detainees.
