13-km canal along Purbachal highway by 2019

The government has taken a mega project to dig a 13.64-kilometre canal on both sides of the Purbachal highway in Dhaka.

The project worth around Tk 5,286 crore will be implemented to mitigate water logging in nearby areas, according to the housing and public works ministry sources.
Bangladesh Army will implement the canal, projected as 100 feet wide, beside the Purbachal, known as the 300 feet highway stretches from Kuril to Balu river.
The canalscape includes 13km service road, 39km walkways for pedestrians, 13 arch bridges, 16 pedestrian bridges, 13km-long corridor and five sluice gates, the ministry sources said.
The government has acquired a total of 90 acres of land that will cost Tk 4,300 crore as compensations for the landowners.
Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain today said that the canal will mitigate the water logging of an important part of the capital including Nikunja, Joar Shahara, DOHS, Dhaka Cantonment, Airport, Kalachand, Kuril and Kurabari areas.
He came up with the assumption today while handing over cheques to the affected 24 families for acquiring their land for the project.
