Hide Market Takes a Hit
EID-UL-AZHA is the occasion when tanners buy almost half the hides they need for the year. Seasonal traders going from neighbourhood to neighbourhood in Dhaka buy hides from people who have sacrificed animals. They then sell them to the tanners. This year though, the tanners did not buy that many hides. Courtesy of dropping demand and prices for leather and leather goods in the EU, where most of the leather is exported, the tanners bought hides for low prices, leaving many seasonal traders disappointed. However, the tanners have started processing the hides they bought.
