Handicrafts And Our Heritage
To exhibit the rich cultural heritage of the Bengalis, a three-day Karu Shilpa Mela [handicrafts fair] was held on Bangla Academy premises in the capital last month. Craftsmen from all over the country put on display the best of their works that remind us of our cultural roots. Visitors were amazed, often baffled too, to see the wide range of innovative works -- coconut shells carved into spiders, lampshades and showpieces; artifacts made out of bamboo and cane; and clay dolls with colourful motifs.
