China prioritises 5 sectors for investment in Bangladesh
China has identified five priority sectors -- commerce, agriculture, industry, energy, and infrastructure -- for its investment and support to Bangladesh and committed to stand beside the country during its any “emergency need”.
It assured Bangladesh of assistance in constructing Dhaka-Cox’s Bazaar broad gaze rail track and setting up coal-based power plants, and a rice research centre, and exploring oil and natural gas, among others.
The assurances came during the three-day visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi who left Dhaka for Beijing today. Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali briefed the media this afternoon on the outcome of Wang’s visit.
Briefing journalists at the conference room of the foreign ministry, he said China assured them of handing over a high yielding rice variety and its technology to Bangladesh to grow more rice to be self-reliant on foods.
It also wants to provide its cooperation in the arenas of defense, information and communications technology, and maritime affairs, Ali said.
China also proposed to sign free-trade agreement (FTA) to narrow down the trade imbalance with Bangladesh and emphasised on importing jute and jute products from Bangladesh, he added.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque who saw the Chinese foreign minister off at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 3:30pm was present at the press conference.
During his visit Wang also met President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Leader of the Opposition Raushan Ershad and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
