Cancel amendment to manpower structure
Miners and workers of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd (BCMCL) staged demonstration yesterday demanding cancellation of an amendment to the manpower structure that the workers claimed would make at least 1900 workers jobless.
The earlier pattern formulated in 2000 keeps the provision for a 2674-strong manpower but as per the amendment approved on January 23 this year, mine authorities are to keep only 738 people under them.
The BCMCL authorities said the rest of the workers will continue their job as they are working for the mine, as per arrangement with a contracted company.
However, after learning the matter of amendment to the BCMCL manpower structure on April 15, the officials, workers and miners got aggrieved. On Saturday, they started agitation, urging the BCMCL authorities to run the mine according to the previous manpower structure.
The workers and miners held a protest rally in the mine area yesterday.
Once the new manpower structure comes into effect, jobs of only 738 people including officers, and permanent and temporary workers and miners will be retained while at least 1900 other staff and workers will lose their job, Wazed Ali, president of BCMCL Miners and Workers Union, said at the rally.
The agitating miners and workers threatened of tough agitation if the new manpower structure is not cancelled within 48 hours.
After holding a press conference, they submitted a memorandum to Md Aminuzzaman, managing director (MD) of BCMCL, urging him to cancel the amended manpower structure.
Contacted, the MD said, "We amended the manpower structure formulated in 2000. But the miners and workers are misinterpreting it. The miners and most of the workers have been working under a contracted company. There is no question of losing their jobs."
