MOU signed between AIUB and BUILD

Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) and American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB), signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) on “Cooperating in the development of the pilot Business Confidence Survey (BCS) in Bangladesh” on October 9, 2012, at AIUB Board Room in Banani. Asif Ibrahim, Chairman, BUILD, and President, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), and Dr Carmen Z Lamagna, Vice- Chancellor, AIUB, signed the MOU on behalf of BUILD and AIUB. The BCS offers insight into business confidence of the investors and private sector and understanding of the economy from their perspectives. The survey will collect information on economic conditions, availability of finance, legal environment, tax environment, customs control, business regulations, public administration and investment climate from business.

Seminar at ASA University

Department of Applied Sociology, ASA University, Bangladesh, organised a seminar titled, 'Livelihood on the Margin: An Applied Sociology Perspective' on October 6, 2012. Partha Hefaz Shaikh, a renowned Livelihood expert presented the Keynote paper. Professor Dr Abu Daud Hasan, Vice-Chancellor (In Charge) and Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Science of ASA University, Bangladesh discussed the paper. Professor Dr Helal Mohiuddin, Chairman of Department of Applied Sociology, moderated the session.

Human Chain by BAU

Ganotantrik Shikkhak Forum of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) formed a human chain at the university premises on October 7, 2012, protesting the recent attack on Buddhist temples and houses at Ramu and Ukhia in Cox's Bazar. The Vice-chancellor of BAU, Professor Dr Md Rafiqul Hoque, attended the programme in front of BAU central library. The speakers demanded immediate arrest of the culprits to ensure a non-communal atmosphere in the country.

Drupal at BRAC University

BRAC University Ayesha Abed Library conducted a one-day workshop on 'Using Open Source Content Management System Drupal to build Library Websites' on October 7, 2012. A total of 26 library professionals from 14 public and private universities, and research institutes participated in the workshop. The Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, Professor Ainun Nishat launched the BRACU library website based on Drupal (http://library.bracu.ac.bd). Drupal is currently being used by numerous academic libraries in the world including Stanford, Toronto, Columbia, Cornell, Washington, Simon Fraser, Calgary and Minnesota University.

Renowned Scientist Professor Dr Choudhury Mahmood Hasan joins MIU

The President of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Chancellor of Manarat International University (MIU) appointed Professor Dr Choudhury Mahmood Hasan, renowned Scientist and Educationist, to join MIU as the Vice-Chancellor on October 13, 2012.

Urban Youth Festival at Goethe-Institut Bangladesh

Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, in cooperation with various partners, has dedicated a festival to the youth of Dhaka from September 27 to 30, 2012. The festival was opened with a flash mob. Prominent film maker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Abdus Salam, CEO of ETV, and Dr Ralf Reusch, from German Embassy Dhaka, were the special guests during the inauguration programme. A debate was held including panel discussions about sex, drugs and the dialogue between generations with members of the civil society. Frustration of not talking about such issues before, the lack of information and the need to talk about these topics which are relevant for society, were focused. A concert with the German rapper Amewu, DJ Werd and the local musicians Shaq, Shanto and Arbovirus rounded up the festival. Their song “Raise up your voice” became the hymn of the whole festival.

Team Optimus becomes the Champion of NSU ICT
Innovation Quest Contest

The team Optimus from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and the team Lightning Activists from University of Dhaka became the Champion and Runners-up, respectively, of the NSU ICT Innovation Quest, an ICT based idea contest, held recently at the North South University campus. The teams beat hundred contestants from different public and private universities across the country. Mostafa Faruque Mohammed, MP, Minister for the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), was present as the chief guest. Special guest M A Hashem, Chairman and Founder Life Member, NSU Foundation and Board of Governors, NSUF, was present along with Mohiuddin Babar, Vice-President, CSR of Robi Axiata Limited.

MUN Conference 2012

CBIT Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, 2012, was arranged for the 2nd time this year in Hyderabad, India. This time international participants also joined from all over the world also joined. Around 39 participants from Bangladesh from Dhaka University Model United Nations Association (DUMUNA) and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) attended CBIT MUN conference this year. They went to Hyderabad on August 29, 2012. The MUN conference was held from August 30 to September 2, 2012. The conference had 7 committees this year, UNSC, UNCAC, UNDP, SPECPOL, CTBTO, HSC (Historic security Council) and, Emergency Response Committee (ERC- Futuristic).
