C&F agents assoc leader shot dead in Shibganj
Loading and unloading of goods at Sonamasjid land port came to a halt yesterday morning as port workers staged demonstration protesting the murder of a leader of Clearing and Forwarding Agents' Association (C&F) in Shibganj upazila on Friday night.
Monirul Islam, 35, treasurer of the association and also general secretary of Ward No-1 of Shahbajpur union unit of Jubo League, was shot dead allegedly by his rivals in the association in Chaturpur area of Shibganj municipality around 7:00pm.
Police arrested Akhirul Islam, 48, president of the same association, its senior Vice-president Sirajul Islam Munshi, 50, and General Secretary Tohorul Islam, 41, in connection with the killing the same night.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Locals said the saw Monirul along with Akhirul, Sirajul and Tohorul at a tea-stall in the area minutes before he was killed.
The four were returning home by Sirajul's car, after attending a function in the district town earlier on the day, said Ashiqur Rahman, officer in-charge of Shibganj Police Station.
Based on the information provided by locals, police detained Sirajul from his house in Jam-e-masjid area around 8:30pm and according to his confession, they also seized the car from a garage adjacent to his house.
At around 10:00pm, the law enforcers arrested Akhirul and Tohorul from a mango orchard near the local lawmaker's house at Pukuria village.
Police quoting victim's family members, said Monirul, might have been killed as a sequel to an enmity over misappropriating the association's fund by the alleged murderers.
Contacted, Sameer Ghosh, joint secretary of Export Association of Mohodipur Land Port at Malda in India, said around 800, including 100 perishable goods-laden trucks got stranded at the port.
Senaul Haque, president of Bondar Sramik Somonnoye Committee, said they would continue the agitation till all the killers were arrested.
